ChatGPT / DALL-E 3 — Deep Space: Character on a Spacewalk

Type: Single still image prompt for ChatGPT (DALL-E 3 image generation)

Output: One 16:9 image — a character floating in open space, untethered or tethered, against a vast deep-space backdrop. Stars, distant galaxies, maybe a planet or nebula behind them. Zero gravity. The character is suspended in the void.

How to use:

  1. Open ChatGPT (or any DALL-E 3 interface).
  2. Paste the MASTER PROMPT below.
  3. Where the prompt says [DESCRIBE YOUR CHARACTER HERE], replace that entire bracketed section with a short description of YOUR character — species, gender, body type, clothing, gear, colours, distinctive features. Keep it to 2-5 sentences.
  4. Send. DALL-E 3 generates one image.

MASTER PROMPT (paste as-is, then fill in the character slot)

A single cinematic still image in 16:9 aspect ratio. A character floats alone in the vacuum of deep space, suspended in zero gravity, drifting slowly against a vast starfield and deep-space backdrop. The character is [DESCRIBE YOUR CHARACTER HERE — species, gender, body type, clothing, gear, colours, distinctive features, keep to 2-5 sentences].

The backdrop is deep space — a high density of sharp stars of varying brightness covering the frame, with a distant galaxy or nebula band adding colour and depth somewhere in the background (pink, teal, or gold — keep it subtle, a distant wash of colour, not overwhelming). The stars should feel like real deep space — thousands of pinpoint stars, some brighter, some faint, no atmosphere, no sky glow, no horizon.

The character is in a space-worthy suit or natural form appropriate to their design — describe their suit, gear, or natural body as relevant. They are floating freely — limbs slightly extended or relaxed, body angled in a natural weightless posture, not standing, not sitting. The pose is calm and weightless, as if they have paused mid-drift. If they have a tether, show it as a thin line trailing off-frame or coiling loosely — a safety line, not a constraint. If they have a helmet, the visor may reflect the starfield or show their face behind it.

Lighting: the primary light is the distant starfield and any nebula or galaxy glow in the background — cool, faint, ambient. Stars provide pinpoint light with no atmosphere to scatter it. If the character has a suit with any reflective surfaces (visor, metal, polished elements), those catch sharp pinpoint star reflections. No harsh directed light. No sun in frame (or a very distant faint one if you want). The lighting should feel like real space — crisp, clear, high-contrast against the black, but soft on the character. No atmospheric haze. No fog. No sky.

Style: cinematic photoreal / painterly sci-fi — deep space realism. Think high-end sci-fi concept art, NASA-inspired spacesuit realism, or cinematic film stills of astronauts in deep space. Detailed textures, crisp stars, volumetric clarity in the black. Not cartoon, not cel-shaded. Photograph-quality or concept-art quality.

Mood: isolation, vastness, quiet awe, calm suspension. The character is alone in the void — not panicked, not struggling, simply floating. There is a stillness to zero gravity. The image should feel like a paused moment in an infinite black.

Composition: the character is the anchor — positioned clearly in the frame but surrounded by space. They can be centred, off to one side, or upper/lower third — but they should read clearly against the starfield. Leave open black space around them — the void is part of the composition. 16:9 aspect ratio. Deep blacks in the negative space, sharp stars across the frame, the character as the single human detail in a vast field.

Variants — different moods, same structure

Variant 1 — Character drifting near a distant planet

Same structure as the master prompt, but change the backdrop to:

The backdrop is deep space with a large distant planet visible — a sphere of alien colour (bands of teal and rust, or pale violet, or a dark planet edged in a thin glowing ring) occupying part of the background. The planet is far enough away that it reads as scenery, not as something the character is orbiting closely — they are near it, not over it. The rest of the frame is dense starfield and a faint nebula band.

Change mood to:

Mood: distance, ambition, the scale of the journey. The character has travelled far and the planet behind them is proof. Quiet contemplation of how far they've come.

Variant 2 — Character with a bright nebula behind them

Same structure, but make the nebula the dominant backdrop:

The backdrop is deep space dominated by a bright nebula — a wide band or cloud of vivid colour (pink, teal, gold, or purple) filling much of the background behind the character, with stars embedded in and behind it. The nebula is luminous but diffuse — it glows, it doesn't obscure. Stars are visible through it and around it. The nebula provides a coloured ambient wash behind the character.

Change lighting to:

Lighting: the nebula is a secondary ambient light source — coloured glow (pink, teal, gold) washing softly over the character from behind, creating a coloured rim light on their silhouette. The starfield still provides crisp pinpoint light. No harsh light. The character is lit from behind/above by the nebula glow and the stars.

Change mood to:

Mood: awe, wonder, immersion in colour and vastness. The character is suspended inside something immense and beautiful.

Variant 3 — Character tumbling slowly (gentle motion implied)

Same structure, but tweak the pose description:

The character is in a slow gentle tumble through space — their body is angled diagonally across the frame, one arm extended, legs trailing, rotating very slowly as if they lost their grip and are spinning at a leisurely rate. The pose conveys slow motion, not panic. Hair, clothing, or any loose elements trail slightly in the direction of the spin. They are not fighting it — just drifting.

Change mood to:

Mood: gentle motion, surrender to the void, calm drift. The character is falling through space at the slowest possible rate. Quiet and weightless.

Variant 4 — Character silhouette against a bright star or galaxy

Same structure, but make the character a silhouette:

The character is seen as a silhouette against a bright background — a dense star cluster, a bright galaxy core, or a glowing nebula band fills the frame behind them. The character is dark against the brightness — their outline is clear, their details are shadowed, the starfield and colour behind them are the visual focus. The character's shape is readable but their features are hidden in silhouette.

Change lighting to:

Lighting: backlit — the bright background (star cluster, galaxy, or nebula) provides all the light, coming from behind the character. The character is a dark silhouette with a soft coloured rim where the background light hits the edge of their form. No front light. No fill. The character is in shadow against the bright void.

Change mood to:

Mood: smallness, insignificance, the sublime. The character is a shape against the infinite — present but dwarfed. Quiet and vast.

Tips for DALL-E 3

  1. Describe the suit or body clearly. DALL-E 3 renders spacesuits well — give it colours, shapes, materials, and any distinctive features. A vague "space suit" gives a generic result. A "white and orange spacesuit with a mirrored gold visor and a thin black tether line" gives something specific.

  2. If the character keeps landing on an invisible surface, tell DALL-E 3 directly: "The character is floating freely in zero gravity — there is no ground, no surface, no planet below them, no horizon. They are suspended in open space with stars all around."

  3. Space is black. Don't be tempted to add atmosphere, sky glow, or fog. Real space is black and clear. If DALL-E 3 adds a blue sky or atmospheric glow, push back in the prompt: "pure black space around the character, no atmosphere, no sky, no fog, no horizon glow."

  4. Stars should be numerous but not noisy. If the starfield looks like static or noise, add "thousands of distinct sharp pinpoint stars of varying brightness, not visual noise or grain."

  5. If the tether keeps getting tangled or looking wrong, simplify: "a single thin straight tether line trailing away from the character into the black, not tangled, not coiled tightly."

  6. The visor reflection is a nice detail but it's optional. If you want it, say "the visor reflects the starfield behind them." If you don't, say "the visor is dark, not reflecting."

  7. Retry with the character more or less prominent. If the character is too small against the stars, add "the character is larger in frame, more central." If they're too big and there's not enough space around them, add "more open black space around the character, the void is visible."

  8. DALL-E 3 sometimes puts the character in an Earth orbit with blue sky. If that happens, be explicit: "deep interplanetary or interstellar space — no Earth, no blue sky, no atmosphere, no planet surface nearby, just stars and black void."

Quick fill-in example

Here's the master prompt filled in for a sample character:

A single cinematic still image in 16:9 aspect ratio. A character floats alone in the vacuum of deep space, suspended in zero gravity, drifting slowly against a vast starfield and deep-space backdrop. The character is a tall man in a white and pale-orange spacesuit with a large mirrored gold visor helmet, the suit bulky and functional with dark grey paneling and a small blue indicator light on the chest. A thin black tether line trails from his waist off-frame to the upper left. His body is angled diagonally, one arm extended slightly, legs relaxed below him, floating in a calm weightless posture. The visor reflects the starfield behind him.
