Just Make It Work: Dungeon Keeper 2 on Modern Windows

Dungeon Keeper 2 crashes on modern 64-bit systems because it relies on DirectDraw and DirectSound, legacy DirectX APIs that are no longer natively supported. To fix this, we use a wrapper called dgVoodoo2 to translate those old calls into modern DirectX 11/12.

The Solution: dgVoodoo2

1. Installation

  1. Download the latest dgVoodoo2 from the official site (dege.freeweb.hu).
  2. Open the downloaded folder and navigate to MS\x86.
  3. Copy all .dll files from this folder (specifically DDraw.dll, D3DImm.dll, and DInput8.dll).
  4. Paste these files directly into the Dungeon Keeper 2 game folder (where DKII.exe is located).

2. Configuration

  1. Run dgVoodooCpl.exe from the dgVoodoo2 root folder.
  2. Navigate to the DirectX tab.
  3. Set the Resolution (e.g., $1920 \times 1080$) and adjust the VRAM as needed.
  4. Click Apply and OK.

3. OS Compatibility Settings

To ensure the game launches without permission errors:

  1. Right-click DKII.exe $\rightarrow$ Properties $\rightarrow$ Compatibility.
  2. Check "Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP (Service Pack 3)".
  3. Check "Run this program as an administrator".

Result

The game should now launch in a modern window or fullscreen without crashing, with textures and sound correctly handled by the modern GPU.
